 Types of Dental Emergencies

Tooth Pain - Extensive decay can reach the pulp, or material inside the tooth, which contains nerves. If the source of your toothache is extensive decay, you may need a root canal; the pain will not go away on its own. An abscess, or deep tooth infection, can also cause pain. A root canal or extraction is often required after a tooth has become abscessed.

To relieve tooth pain at home, use a warm compress and take ibuprofen (if not allergic or contraindicated by your Doctor) taken orally (not placed onto the tooth or gum). Be sure to call us right away so we can see you as soon as possible.

Dental Injury – Dental injuries are common and unexpected. If facial trauma occurs, it can result in cracked, broken, or dislodged teeth. It is imperative that you contact our office immediately if you have suffered a traumatic dental injury. The sooner we can treat it, the better the outcome is likely to be.

Until you get to our office, there are some steps you can take to preserve chipped, broken, or dislodged teeth:

If your tooth has come out completely, gently clean it, being careful to avoid removing any connected fibers, and place it in milk or inside your mouth along the cheek to preserve the living tissue on it. This will help the survival of the tooth attachments.

Permanent teeth lost by a child can be placed in milk or slightly salted water. Dislodged baby teeth do not need to be replaced; however, the child should be seen by a medical professional if the tooth was knocked out in an injury.

Broken Prosthetics or Dental appliances - While this issue may not always be a true emergency,  calling our office helps us correct your smile more easily and see you quickly.
